Everything you need to know to start playing, improve your skills and have a blast with friends
The Impostor is a free online social deduction game in which a group of players receives a secret word โ everyone except the impostor. Through rounds of hints, discussion and voting, the group tries to figure out who the impostor is, while the impostor attempts to blend in undetected.
Think of it as a digital version of classic party games like Spyfall or Insider, but entirely browser-based and playable from anywhere in the world. No downloads, no accounts, no cost.
The game is perfect for parties, family gatherings, online hangouts and any situation where you want a quick, engaging group activity. Rounds last only a few minutes, so you can play as many or as few as you like.
The minimum is 3, but the sweet spot is 4โ10 players. More players means more suspects and more fun.
Any modern browser on any device โ Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge. No app download needed.
Required for online multiplayer. Local / pass-and-play mode works offline once the page is loaded.
The Impostor offers several ways to play so you can pick the one that fits your situation:
The flagship experience. Create a private room, share the code with friends, and play remotely in real time. Each player uses their own device and hints are submitted through the in-game chat. Great for long-distance friend groups, work teams or online communities.
Playing together in the same room? This mode assigns roles and words on each player's device while the host controls the flow. Perfect for house parties and classroom activities.
Only have one device? No problem. Players pass a single phone or tablet around. Each person privately views their role, then passes the device to the next player. Ideal for travel, camping trips or spontaneous game nights.
Feeling adventurous? Join a public room and play with strangers from around the world. A great way to practice your deduction skills and meet new people.
Open impostor-game.app, enter your player name, and either create a new room or paste a room code a friend has shared with you. The room creator becomes the host.
The host picks a word category (animals, food, movies, etc.) and selects the number of impostors. One impostor is the default, but experienced groups can add more for extra challenge.
When everyone is ready, the host hits Start. The server randomly selects a secret word from the chosen category and assigns it to all citizens. The impostor receives a different screen telling them they are the impostor โ but they do not see the word.
Each player privately sees their role on their own screen. Citizens see the secret word; the impostor sees a warning. Keep your role and your word secret!
In turn order, each player submits a short hint (usually one word) related to the secret word. Citizens want their hints to prove they know the word without making it obvious to the impostor. The impostor must bluff a convincing hint based purely on what others have said.
After all hints are in, a free discussion phase begins. Players debate, question each other's hints and try to build a case for who the impostor might be. This is where the real fun happens!
Everyone simultaneously votes for the player they think is the impostor. The player with the most votes is eliminated. If it was the impostor, the citizens win. If an innocent citizen is eliminated, the impostor wins!
You know the secret word. Your job is to prove you know it through your hints while figuring out who among the group does not know it. Balance is critical โ be specific enough that fellow citizens trust you, but vague enough that the impostor cannot deduce the word from your hint alone.
You do not know the secret word. Your mission is to blend in by listening carefully to others' hints and crafting your own plausible hint. If you survive the vote, you win. Bonus: if you can correctly guess the word after being caught, you can steal a comeback victory!
A minimum of 3, but 4โ10 is the ideal range. With more players the impostor has more cover, making the game more challenging and exciting for everyone.
