10 Strategies to Catch the Impostor

Sharpen your deduction skills with battle-tested techniques that will turn you into the ultimate detective.

๐Ÿง  10 Strategies to Catch the Impostor

Finding the impostor is not just about luck โ€” it requires observation, psychology and a solid plan. Here are ten proven strategies that top players rely on to unmask the faker every single round.

1. Pay Attention to the First Hints

The opening round of hints is the most revealing. Genuine players tend to give confident, specific clues right away because they know the word. The impostor, on the other hand, often stalls or gives something deliberately vague. Watch for hesitation, overly broad adjectives, or hints that could apply to almost anything.

A good detective keeps a mental โ€” or written โ€” note of each player's first hint and compares it to later rounds.

2. Use Medium-Specificity Hints

If you are a citizen, avoid giving hints that are too obvious (which hand the word to the impostor) or too obscure (which confuse everyone). A mid-level hint confirms the word to fellow citizens without giving the impostor a free pass. For example, if the word is "dog," saying "pet" is too easy; saying "canine loyalty" strikes a better balance.

This technique forces the impostor to guess without a safety net.

3. Watch Body Language and Timing

In local or video-call games, non-verbal cues are gold. Does a player look at others before answering? Do they take noticeably longer to type their hint? Impostors often mirror other players' hints to blend in, but the delay in formulating a safe response can betray them.

Combine timing observations with content analysis for the best results.

4. Ask Follow-up Questions

During the discussion phase, press suspects with specific follow-up questions. Ask them to elaborate on their hint or explain the connection. A citizen can easily justify their hint because they know the word; an impostor may stumble, contradict themselves, or give a suspiciously generic explanation.

Targeted questions are more effective than open accusations.

5. Track Hint Patterns Across Rounds

Over multiple rounds, genuine players naturally build on prior hints โ€” their clues form a logical chain. The impostor's hints may seem disconnected or shift direction abruptly as they try to adapt to new information. Tracking this pattern over two or three rounds dramatically increases your detection accuracy.

Take note of who consistently adds meaningful depth versus who merely echoes others.

6. Set a "Trap Hint"

Experienced players sometimes give a hint that sounds related but is actually slightly misleading โ€” a controlled trap. If the impostor takes the bait and builds their next hint on your misleading clue, you have strong evidence. Use this sparingly, though, because it can also confuse fellow citizens if overdone.

The key is subtlety: the hint must still be technically valid so your team stays on track.

7. Notice Who Agrees Too Easily

Impostors tend to avoid confrontation. They quickly agree with the majority, rarely challenge other hints, and try to stay under the radar. If a player never questions anyone and always goes along with the group, they might be hiding something.

Genuine players, confident in the word, are more likely to challenge suspicious hints directly.

8. Vary Your Strategy Each Game

If you always give the same type of hint or always vote in a predictable order, skilled impostors will learn your patterns. Mix up your play style: sometimes give a bold hint, sometimes a subtle one. Keep the impostor guessing about what the citizens will do next.

Unpredictability is a citizen's best friend.

9. Collaborate During Voting

The voting phase is your final weapon. Before casting your vote, share your reasoning openly. When citizens compare notes, overlapping suspicions quickly point to the impostor. Avoid snap votes based on gut feeling alone โ€” combine your observations with those of other players for a much higher success rate.

Coordinated voting turns individual hunches into group intelligence.

10. Stay Calm When You Are Accused

Even citizens get accused sometimes. If fingers point at you, do not panic. Calmly explain the reasoning behind each of your hints and how they connect to the word. Confident, logical self-defence is far more convincing than emotional denial โ€” and it also demonstrates citizen behaviour to the rest of the group.

Ironically, the way you handle an accusation can reveal more than the hints themselves.
